Cold TIG Welding: A Quick Guide
Cold TIG, often called Cold Arc, Cold Welding, or Low-Temperature TIG, is a specialized TIG welding process designed for joining ultra-thin metals or performing precise, low-heat repairs with minimal distortion. It's not truly "cold," but operates at significantly lower heat input compared to standard TIG.
How It Works: The Pulse is Key
The core technology is an advanced high-frequency pulse. The welding current rapidly switches between:
-
Peak Current (Pulse): A high, short burst that melts the metal and creates the weld pool.
-
Base Current: A very low, background current that maintains the arc but allows the weld pool to cool and solidify almost instantly.
This rapid on-off pulsing happens dozens or even hundreds of times per second, allowing for pinpoint control over heat.
Key Features & Benefits:
-
Minimal Heat Affected Zone (HAZ): Greatly reduces warping, burning through, and color changes (critical for stainless steel).
-
Welds Thin Materials: Can weld sheets as thin as 0.3mm - 0.5mm (like aluminum foil, thin stainless, or auto body panels).
-
Precise Control: Perfect for intricate work, edge welding, and small repairs where heat spread must be contained.
-
Improved Weld Appearance: Often produces a clean, consistent, "stacked dimes" bead with less sagging.
Common Applications:
-
Automotive body repair (patches, panels)
-
Kitchen equipment & decorative stainless steel
-
Artistic metalwork & sculpture
-
Repairing electronics enclosures
-
HVAC ducting
-
Aerospace components (thin-gauge alloys)
Important Parameters on a Cold TIG Machine:
-
Frequency (Hz): How many pulses per second. Higher frequency = tighter, cooler weld.
-
Duty Cycle (%): Ratio of Peak Current time to total cycle time. Lower % = cooler operation.
-
Peak Current & Base Current: Adjusted independently for maximum control.
Cold TIG vs. Standard TIG:
-
Standard TIG: Uses a steady, continuous DC or AC current. Better for thicker materials and full-penetration welds.
-
Cold TIG: Uses a pulsed DC current. The tool for heat-sensitive, thin-gauge work where control outweighs penetration.
